The Eurovision Song Contest Used to Be a Whimsical Delight – However It Has Become a Cynical Way to Sanitize Conflict.

A new acronym came to light a couple of months following the onset of the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Known as WCNSF, it stands for “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This designation is specific to Gaza, as stated by health professionals such as paediatricians. Normally, it is unusual for physicians to care for a young patient who has seen the death of their entire family. Yet, there has been nothing “normal” about the devastating conflict in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been obliterated and the number of child amputees is greater than that of any other region in the world. Nothing ordinary about numerous doctors returning from a devastated terrain with reports of children being intentionally shot at.

An Unimaginable Crisis Regardless of a Reported Truce

Gaza remains an utter catastrophe. Critical healthcare resources are failing to reach those in need, and major human rights organizations assert that genocidal acts are continuing. Officials disputes these claims, just as it denies each claim it is charged with. Yet as grieving children who lost parents are now freezing in temporary shelters, there is some ostensibly positive news: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from continuing with its declared purpose of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” Eurovision will continue to extend a welcoming platform for Israel, despite the fact that several European countries have now withdrawn in objection. And this, it seems, is what global togetherness manifests as.

Eurovision, of course prohibited Russia from competing in 2022 over the “grave situation in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza appears to be entirely distinct.

A Selective Vision

Disregard the reality that Israel was accused of unfair vote practices last year in what seems to have been an bid to politicise Eurovision. Ignore the report that a young child was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza just days ago. Neglect the data that settler violence and forced displacement in the West Bank have surged. Disregard the condition that global media are still blocked from independent reporting in Gaza. All of this, evidently, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s much-touted ethos of unity.

The Pageant Proceeds While Ignoring Staggering Tragedy

Eurovision turns 70 next year – nearly twice the projected longevity of a person in Gaza today. The event will proceed, but it will never be able to restore the pure, unadulterated fun it historically embodied. A contest that initially championed harmony has transformed into a cynical way to provide a cultural veneer for conflict.
