The Battle Royale's Specialized Movement Mechanics Become Widely Accessible During This Update

The game developers has a special treat prepared for Apex Legends gamers, perfectly timed for the holidays. Enthusiasts of the battle royale's highly fluid movement can rejoice to learn that an innovative traversal feature will be introduced when the Amped season launches on Nov. 4.

Unveiling Mantle Boosting

Dubbed "Mantle Boosting" by Respawn, this feature provides gamers a surge of forward momentum when scaling ledges and walls. As explained key developer the design lead, Mantle Boosting has unofficially existed of Apex Legends for some time, usually referred to as "mantle jumping." But it's no easy feat for casual gamers, and typically employed by competitive players in competitive play or esports competitions. In this update, Respawn simplifies the process for players of all skill levels to execute these tricky speed-boosts.

"Mantle Boosts have been in the game for some time, but the movement requires skill to pull off and gamers would never know it's possible without external guides," Canavese explains. "Now including a Mantle Boost indicator so players can clearly identify when and how to trigger the high-octane traversal skill, making accessible the feature and introducing fresh strategies to compete for a much wider base."

The Reasoning Behind Make It Accessible

What's the reason for making a once niche movement quirk available to everyone? Lead Legend designer Josh Mohan explains developers aims for players to experience empowerment — even those who are inexperienced.

"Our community performs advanced techniques like super-gliding and tap-strafing, and we looked around at our competition, observed what our players are doing, and we said, 'What if we provide these capabilities to a broader audience?'" the designer clarifies. "Because right now, some of these advanced [movement] mechanics are somewhat awkward to use — it requires to remap your keybinds and execute within precise timings. So we said, 'What if we create a more official version?'"

Season 27 Movement Focus

Mobility is primarily the name of the game in Season 27, with characters the gravity mage, Rampart, and the aerial combatant receiving enhancements to maintain them in motion. The cooldown period on her tactical ability is shorter, and this skill will propel users into the air faster than before. Her defensive walls now include overhead protection and capability to provide speed boosts to allies in range. But the spotlight is on aerial Valkyrie who's getting significant improvements now, with multiple tweaks applied to make her stronger, quicker, and more lethal.

"I think there's quite a consensus that her moment is here," says Legend designer the designer. "Certainly that she's been dominant in the past, but due to the addition of new Legends, movement[-based] passives, and redeployment tools, it felt like she's not very relevant in today's the game. It was an ideal chance for the team to reexamine multiple elements [of her kit] and essentially bring her back to former prominence."

Enhancements to the Aerial Legend

To restore Valkyrie's relevance in current strategies, the developer notes the team assessed each of her abilities and introduced significant changes. Her VTOL Jets have been upgraded, increasing her speed while airborne, and this equipment regenerates much quicker, enabling her to remain longer in the air. She can no longer take damage from her ultimate ability, which was enhanced to tag opponents who are hit from it. Her Skyward Dive skill — which lifts her entire squad skyward for redeployment or retreat — now takes much less time to activate. Additionally, she gains recently added Legend Upgrades that players can choose to conserve resources, expand the spread of her rockets, or accelerate her ultimate takeoff time.

"Valkyrie's equipment now delivers on the pilot experience," he comments.

Olympus Improvements

Even the game's only floating arena, this location, is getting a movement-friendly facelift, with an extensive redesign that opens up bottlenecks and makes securing elevated positions more manageable. The developers says Apex Legends this update is all about giving players the tools they need to compete in matches.

"Really, we examined Apex's core identity as a fast-paced FPS," explains lead Legend designer the lead.

The battle royale Season 27: Amped releases November 4th at 10 a.m. PST/1 p.m. EST.
