🔗 Share this article Danish national man given suspended prison term for distributing explicit film scenes on Reddit A Denmark-based man has been found guilty of uploading sexually explicit scenes from protected films and television shows on the social media platform Reddit. According to a police document obtained by BBC News, the anonymous man shared 347 video excerpts of nude scenes in a Reddit group he moderated, which were then watched 4.2 million times. The country's authorities state he has been handed a 7-month deferred sentence for copyright infringement. Legal analysts explain the defendant was charged under a seldom-invoked provision in Danish copyright law, with the judge ruling that by removing the footage out of their original context, the man had damaged the performers' "moral rights". He has also been found guilty of distributing more than 25 terabytes of protected digital content. From March 2022 to mid-2023, the user known as "the pseudonym KlammereFyr" on Reddit posted sexually explicit clips featuring over 100 actresses. He shared them in the subreddit he was a moderator of. Per the Danish copyright protection group The Rights Alliance (TRA), his online community had more than 6,000 subscribers and users were prompted to ask for clips of particular actors. In last year, advocates reported the case to the authorities on behalf of the impacted artists, filmmakers and producers, which resulted in the subreddit being closed down. One actress, one of the actresses whose explicit content were shared in the group, told local media at the time she felt there was a distinction between appearing naked in a movie and appearing on Reddit. The performer stated the uploads constituted "exploitation". 'A significant message' The defendant was arrested in September 2024 and pleaded culpable to the allegations recently. In a comment after the verdict, TRA head Maria Fredenslund said the outcome sent an "important" signal "that violations of creators' entitlements has consequences". The verdict is considered unprecedented in the country for its use of the "ethical protections" section of the national copyright law, which states an artist's creation cannot be utilized in a way which infringes upon their reputation. Copyright law expert Dr Alina Trapova told the media the legal matter was "rare" for its emphasis on the damage to the dignity of an artist, rather than to them financially. How the case could affect other countries is uncertain. But she said there may be "more and more of these actions" in the coming years with the growth of artificial intelligence, where "the sanctity of an individual's creative output might be compromised with greater ease".
